Any Color You Like

You said you were more fluid,
Not quite like me, you insisted.
And, I thought you meant
Like water, unlike chocolate.

‘What about color?’, I persisted,
‘Any color you like, darling!’, you said.
I thought to myself, ‘that’s straight out of Pink Floyd?’
Instead, ‘Like my carnelian earrings,’ I smilingly jibed.

Now, I wonder why I mistook you for the blazing sun,
When you were only another blood thirsty chameleon,
Intent on gouching out, and, escaping with an eye;
And, relieved at my close escape, I heave a sigh!

    Lovely poem, brings out the dark side in all of us. It is always hard to take the pain when given by another, but we heal and realize it is what is best for us. It is always better to be free than have a chameleon around.

    I might call this the “poem of the near-hit” — the chameleon had blended into its background, waiting to strike. Nice one.

    Thank goodness you escaped, and the chameleon revealed for what it really is…it can be hard to push through some things, but always we recover, and press on to greener pastures. Lovely poem–and a great One Shot!

    Sounds like a needed escape after reading the ending. The lines “I thought to myself, β€˜that’s straight out of Pink Floyd?’/ Instead, β€˜Like my carnelian earrings,’ I smilingly jibed.” What a great line to undercut that Floyd thought. (I’m a huge fan) Happy One Shot!

    Yes wise to keep on moving when someone has no opinion–too many second hand copies out there with no identity and who wants a “yes dear” clone seeking to take control. Well written and conveyed. Thanks for posting. Gay (@beachanny)
